Cattleman's at Indian Cliffs Ranch
We moved to El Paso, Texas in 2022. I immediately got a job at Horizon Middle and of course I would ask co-workers where I could get good Texas Steak. Unanimously, they all said Cattleman's in Fabens. At the time I didn't even know where Fabens was. I knew it wasn't in El Paso.
Three years went by and Michelle and I have always wanted to go to Cattleman's at Indian Cliff Ranch. On September 27, out of the blue we went to Cattleman's. The prices here were more on the high end, but it wasn't too expensive. Being that times have been pretty good for us, money wise, we decided to go.
Cattleman's is out in rural area known as Fabens. It is about a 30 minute drive from our home and literally in the middle of nowhere. Finding the ranch isn't a problem, but the restaurant is on a road further in. We had a hard time finding it since it was our first time here. Michelle said they don't take reservations and when we arrived at the parking lot the place was packed. I was worried we would have to wait for a while to get seated. But when we entered the restaurant it was empty.
Our waiter was awesome, he had great customer services, very attentive. We ordered a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer and for entree's Michelle ordered a filet mignon ($45) and I ordered a 10 oz ribeye ($39). Considering most places are charging over $30 per steak, these steak prices weren't too bad. I believe they get the meat from their ranch so if that is the case, you know it is fresh meat. In addition, the pineapple coleslaw, bread, and baked beans were free.
The people who dine at Cattleman's treat it as a special event, you could tell because almost everyone was dressed up. Our food arrived and it was a tasty meal. Everything was good from the shrimp cocktail to the steak. The only thing that was subpar was the bread because it was dry. As expected the steak was juicy a bit salty but that was neutralized by the pineapple coleslaw. For dessert I had their homemade apple pie with ice cream and Michelle ordered the chocolate mousse. I like my ice cream on the side in case I couldn't finish my apple pie, I could take it home without it being wet from the ice cream.
After the dinner we decided to visit the petting zoo. It is free to patrons who ate/eat at the restaurant and $5 for visitors. At the zoo are a snake pit, goats, deer. We walked further along and saw a tent with a horse auction. That must be why the parking lot was so full. I've never seen a horse auction before. We watched as auctioneer spoke really fast selling young horses. One of the young horses was sold for $3900. After that horse was sold we saw a little girl riding it and the mom told us that her daughter raised that horse and was sad to see it go.
After watching the auction, we tried to find the longhorns and buffalos but didn't see it. I gave up, but Michelle wanted to continue to look for it. So we went back to the horse auction and tried to find the longhorn and buffalo. We didn't ask anyone not sure why, but decided to try look for them ourselves. After about 10 minutes, finally found the longhorn and buffalo. They were together albeit in separate areas. One of my dreams is to see a buffalo stampede. When I posted the longhorn on Instagram, people joked that I ate that cow for dinner.
The trip to Cattleman's was enjoyable and there I saw it memorable. In the future I would be able to recall the experience. That is what makes it memorable.
